About 76 percent female students at tertiary-level educational institutions face sexual harassment within and outside the campuses at the hands of campus-related people, says a study report.

The report also states that the tendency is highest at public universities (87 percent), followed by university-colleges (76 percent), private universities (66 percent) and medical colleges (54 percent).

Human Development Research Centre (HDRC) conducted the study that unveiled the ugly sides of campus environs.

The findings of the study were revealed at a dissemination seminar on ‘Situational Analysis of Sexual Harassment at Tertiary Level Education Institutes in and around Dhaka’ at the BRAC Centre Inn auditorium in the capital Monday.

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. AK Azad Chowdhury attended the seminar as chief guest while Prof. Abul Barkat, study team leader, placed the findings of the study.

The UGC chief expressed grave concern over sexual harassment at educational institutions and urged the authorities concerned to ensure “women-friendly educational atmosphere”.

He also stressed need for formation of a complaint committee in every university across the country to prevent sexual and other forms of harassment on the campuses.
